Project 3: LightArchitectural
Design II- ARC 257
This project emphasizes the importance of light through the design of a non-denominational chapel at Farmingdale State College. The college envisions the chapel as a peaceful space where people of all faiths can gather, worship, and reflect. The project explores how the creative use of natural light can enhance the spiritual and emotional experience of the space. By carefully controlling and directing light throughout the structure, the design aims to create an environment that is both functional and visually inspiring, supporting moments of worship, contemplation, and tranquility.

Site Selection

I selected this location because it appeared to receive the greatest amount of natural daylight on campus throughout the day. The site is open and unobstructed by nearby buildings, allowing sunlight to reach the structure from multiple directions and creating opportunities for brighter interior spaces and stronger visual connections to the surrounding environment. In addition, the area is slightly separated from the main academic buildings, which helps create a quieter and more reflective atmosphere appropriate for gathering, relaxation, and contemplation. The proximity to the water also enhances the experience of the site by introducing openness, views, and a calming natural setting that complements the architectural concept.
